Test Drive EVs At Detroit Auto Show

Posted January 10
electric-avenue-2010 Electric vehicles are a major part of the North American International Auto Show this year. Manufacturers of EV's are desperate to get ahead of their competitors in this new and expanding market and many are using this high profile show to unveil their latest plans and ideas.

Car makers have realised how important electric vehicles are to their future which is why Nissan and Mitsubishi have both arrived at this years show with only their electric cars, the Leaf and the iMiEV. It's an indication of how mainstream EVs are set to become, as is the fact that Tesla are sharing the main floor at the show next to the likes of Audi and Land Rover.

'Electric Avenue' is the section of the show devoted just to EVs. It contains lots of the smaller electric manufacturers and a display for the Automotive X Prize. You can check out some of the entrants for the X Prize such as AMP Electric Vehicles Saturn Sky conversion.

The most exciting part of this years show though has to be the 'EcoXperience'. The vast majority of people have never driven an electric vehicle and this is a chance to find out what it's like. You can actually get behind the wheel and test drive various different electric cars around a small circuit, as well as a healthy selection of hybrids and a fuel cell vehicle. The makers of these vehicles are hoping that by doing this the general public will realise that these cars are refined, practical alternatives to internal combustion engines. It's a great idea to get people to begin to accept them.
