Smart Tyres

Posted August 11
goodyear-tyre Want to know one of the simplest ways to improve fuel economy? Inflate your tyres to the correct level. It may sound silly but the European Union have estimated that 71 percent of drivers are using under inflated tyres and the U.S. Department of Energy calculated that correct tyre inflation could save drivers 3.3% in fuel.

This is the problem Goodyear are hoping to address with their self inflating smart tyre featuring AMT, or Air Maintenance Technology. The idea is that each tyre contains its own tiny pressure gauge and pump to ensure that the correct pressure is maintained at all times. Remarkably, power for the system can be generated as the wheel spins while driving.

Smart tyres could one day be universal since it's been estimated that production and fitting of the tyres could ultimately cost little more than current tyres and would easily be offset by improved fuel efficiency and a longer tyre lifespan. Other benefits of the system include improved road handling and of course the environmental benefits of reduced fuel consumption.

Goodyear have yet to estimate a timeframe for the arrival of their AMT smart tyres.
