Porsche 918 Spyder PHEV a Reality

Posted March 11
porsche-918-hybrid At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to the world. At the time it was just a concept but Porsche have now announced that orders can be made for the limited edition production version.

Porsche are putting a lot of effort into the design of this car and it will feature a carbon fibre reinforced plastic monocoque body. The electric part of the 918 is not just for show either. Liquid cooled lithium-ion batteries will supply two large electric motors, enabling them to produce a whopping 218 hp. This is on top of the 500+ hp that will be generated by the 4.0 litre V8. For short (and sedate!) journeys there won't be any need to use the V8 though as the 918 will have a 16 mile all electric range. Porsche expect the car to only use a miserly 3.0 litres of fuel per 100 km.

If you're interested in buying a Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid you'll need to wait until 2013 before first deliveries of the car are made. You'll also need to be quick - only 918 copies of the supercar are going to be made. Finally, you'll need to have around US$850,000 in cash spare!
