Audi A2 EV

Posted November 11
audi-a2-concept Audi have released details of their forthcoming A2 EV. The A2 Concept will be a small, lightweight city car offering fast recharge times.

The compact A2 concept will be around 60cm shorter than a Nissan Leaf and seat just four passengers, yet Audi have managed to find space for a specially designed city bike between the rear seats and cargo compartment. Another interesting feature is the white glass roof which has the ability to become transparent. When a button is pressed an electrical current aligns particles in the roof which then allows light to pass through. The ability to completely cut light from penetrating the sunroof should reduce the need for air conditioning.

A weight of just 1100 kg is achieved through the A2 EV's carefully designed space frame. Multiple materials are used to achieve both strength and light weight. Aluminum components are reinforced with carbon fibre polymer components to form the structure.

Lithium-ion batteries storing 31 kilowatt hours of energy will combine with a 116 horsepower electric motor to propel the Audi A2 EV to 60 mph in a fraction over 9 seconds and on to a restricted top speed of 93 mph. Not bad for such a small electric car.

Under the European Driving Cycle it's estimated that range will be in the region of 124 miles. It will take 90 minutes to fully recharge the batteries using 3 phase current and only 4 hours using regular household current. These figures should prove ideal for a city car mainly doing short trips.
